Awe, Thanksgiving, and Mercy:
An Autumn Bible Study
In this extraordinary year of Mercy and this time of societal turmoil, the parish extends a special offering: a fall Bible Study. Wednesdays from 6:30-8:30 we will gather after sunset in the Mary Chapel for scriptural reflection, faith sharing, and prayer. Participants will also have the opportunity to develop their own
written reflections on Scripture in a supportive environment.
October 5th and 12th The Days of Awe. This phrase is used by our Jewish sisters and brothers to describe the days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur -- just when our Bible Study begins! In solidarity, we will tap into our own awe through Scripture study and faith sharing.
October 19th Jesus: His Relationship to Fame and Controversy. On the evening of the 3rd and final presidential debate, we will look at how Jesus responded to the mass reaction activated by his ministry, and his personal relationship to controversy.
October 26th Immigrant Experience and the Shaping of the Old Testament. The topic of immigration may seem like a “hot topic” ripped from the headlines of today’s news, but it was also the foundational experience that birthed our scriptural tradition.
November 2nd All Souls Need Mercy. On all-souls day, as we enter the final month of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy we will honor our year’s experience of this grace by revisiting BIble passages that feature mercy, and sharing personal reflections.
November 9th The Prophet Miriam. Building on the Mary Magdalene service this past July, we will look at this fascinating prophet -- sister of Moses -- in the Bible, in midrash, and in art. The day after election day, we will invite the parish to join us in prayer as our nation begins a new chapter.
November 16th Finding the Author in Authority. Throughout the weeks of the Bible study, each participant will be journaling and reflecting on particular Bible passages. In this final gathering we will have our own sort of thanksgiving: sharing the harvest of our unique scriptural explorations.
Suggested donation: $40 for the series or $10 per class.
