And not just our turkey, but our BBQ chicken, our baked seasoned fish, and our homestyle pork chops as well! It’s time once again for “What-The-Heck-Is-That-Thing-In-The-Picture??”, otherwise known as the “Our Turkey Thanksgiving Meal Fund”!
The number of people visiting both the Welcome Table and the Food Pantry continues to climb. Though Halloween is over, here’s something scary to think about—from January to October 2014 we served 93,005 meals in both programs, a 5% increase over last year (which was 4% higher than the year before!). At the same time, our government food funding is till down, specifically to our Food Pantry, which has not been able to recuperate from losing most of our funding last year. That’s not just scary—it’s chilling. As the joyousness and festivities (and overindulgence!) of Thanksgiving approach, there are still many, many of our neighbors who struggle to feed their families each day.
So this Thanksgiving season, in addition to raising funds for our Thanksgiving meal—including 200 sit-down meals, 400 homebound meals and 225 Thanksgiving baskets!—we continue to include funding for our Welcome Table and Food Pantry as well. We have seen amazing generosity from the Xavier community during turkey time and I am confident that we can meet (and maybe even exceed??!!) our $25,000 Goal! I thank you all in advance for your gifts and for your work to make this a season of abundance for those who usually make do with less.
